The last Friday in August brings us that much closer to the puck dropping on another NHL season. A few nuggets to pass the time:
Going to the Rookie Game? Make sure to get your (free) tickets ahead of time.... Resisting the urge to make a juvenile joke about entitling an article "Most Amazing No. 2" (yes, I know it's a countdown of accomplishments), I'll point out that this profile of Bobby Carpenter is the best one you'll read from a newspaper with a witch on a broomstick in its masthead all day.... Ho hum, Alex Ovechkin spotted with another attractive blond (another pic here).... When the Sens don't match the offer sheet on Andrej Meszaros (because he's not worth $5 million), "the door opens for ... Lawrence Nycholat to earn a spot on the blue-line." Um, downgrade (and yet another entry in our "Where Is That Crappy Former Caps Blueliner Now?" series).... Finally, the line of the day goes to the great Steven Ovadia at PuckUpdate: "There's a very famous Yiddish joke that features people at a wedding complaining about the food and then finishing up with 'And the portions? They're too small.' With that in mind, FSN and Sun will only show 65 Florida Panther games this season."

1) Can't imagine there would be a team/GM dumb enough to pay Meszeros 5 million PLUS lose draft picks to boot. Do these guys ever learn? The guys a decent young defensemen who might be worth a salary of 2.5-3, tops!
1) There still is no confirmation on Meszeros, but the rumors are that TB is the team that made the offer. They do need help on their backline, and could probably afford to lose a 1st,2nd,3rd round pick next year.
2) However, from what we can find out 5 mil would put them over the cap? Have to say again, 5+ mil for that guy is nuts!
@ Faux: My understanding is that Tampa traded their 3rd in the Malone deal so it couldn't be them unless they got that pick back. But I could be wrong.
Then again, that could be the reason nothing has been announced - Tampa's feverishly trying to re-acquire that pick from Pitt.
1. I'm not sure if the comment here should be "It's good to be Ovie!" or "Russian machine never break."
2. Tampa giving up the potential #1 pick in the draft for Meszaros? I dunno...
3. Seems like Ottawa is trying to be Tampa north.
1) Anyone else wonder if this whole 'offer sheet' rumor nonsense was initiated by Meszeros' agent to spur negotiations?
2) The team declared an 'impasse'. Believing that you may lose an important player for a couple of draft picks may give them impendence to get a deal done.
I think it's legit. What may have been the agent blowing smoke, however, was the supposed KHL offer (though I don't doubt he could get an offer pretty easily, I have my doubts of how seriously that option would be considered).
Like you said JP, Tampa Bay's 3rd belongs to Pittsburgh and they would have to get it back before they can put out an offer sheet. And since there's no mention anywhere of that happening and the offer sheet apparently has already been made, I doubt it's Tampa. Not to mention it would put them $2 million over the cap and they'd lose next year's #1 which could be Tavares or Hedman.
Ah, small town newspapers...
You'll notice that the writer never mentions where the Capitals drafted Bobby, just that the Hartford Whalers didn't take him at #4. Great, thanks--crossing #4 off my list, only have about 200 other potential slots to check....
I guess that's what happens when the writer is also the editor (and probably the copy editor and fact checker too).
I checked out the pictures of Ovechkins new women and he sure knows how to pick them. I checked out a few Youtube viedos and in one of the videos the commentor says that Victoria may someday leave Russia for Hollywood to persue her career. First the flashbacks of Wayne Gretzky moving to the Kings came to mind. I wish Ovie all the best and happiness in the world, but hopefully one day the Next Great One does not pick and follow the First Great Ones move out West.
Hmm, Yahoo reports a trade to TB as a done deal.

The bolts would be giving up Kuba, Picard and that 'potential Tavares' first-rounder. Don't they know they need more, not less D-men in Tampa Bay?
