Trade Deadline Open Thread

Make sure to check the comments for the latest updates
Breaking: Caps Get Huet
Breaking: Caps Get Fedorov
Breaking: Caps Get Cooke for Pettinger

Like last year, I wanted to throw open a thread for you guys to discuss any and everything trade deadline-related, so here it is.

For all the latest news, I recommend Kukla's Korner, Spector's Hockey and TSN.ca (and if you've got other go-to's, let us know in the comments).

Is that graphic rehashed? You bet it is!

And while we all expect the Caps to stand pat (despite a history of doing otherwise), here are the Caps' picks, by round, in the 2008 Entry Draft, FYI:

1st – WSH
2nd – WSH
2nd – FROM SJ
2nd – FROM PHI
3rd – WSH*
4th – FROM LA
5th – WSH
6th – WSH
7th – WSH

* The Caps will owe either a third or a fourth round pick to Boston as compensation for last year's Milan Jurcina trade, depending on Jurcina's games played and total ice time, and since Juice ain't going to average 20 minutes per game (one of the triggers), it's going to be a fourth round pick that the Caps lose (but I assume they can't trade their third, as it is possible, technically, that it will be Boston's).

So enjoy Deadline Day, and here's hoping the Thrashers, Bolts, Cats and 'Canes all get ripped off.

Note: I will be adding a Tuesday morning post, but this will stay at the top of the page, so be sure to check out the morning Roundup after 6:30 AM or so.

Forsberg (one of my favorites) returns to Avalanche. Hope he can still do well for a little while before retiring for good.

Now that's a shock... everyone thought that Philly would be the only place he'd go, and even that looked like a longshot.

I don't think the Caps will make any significant moves at all before the deadline. They're in the doldrums between playing hard to squeak into the playoffs or packing it up and going home...

I believe the Cap's might still make it to the playoffs. But, hope they don't go with a rental trying to get there.

Anonymous said...

...how'd Schultz make it on to that board?

Hooks Orpik said...

Caps fans can rejoice, it looks like the Southeast Selloff has began: Prospal to PHI for Alex Picard. But Boyle re-signs 5 ears $40 million.

Double yoi. Not sure I like either of those moves from the TB perspective.

Anonymous said...

8 million a year for Boyle? How do you justify that when Phaneuf is getting 6.5? It's going to be the Richards situation all over again!

I think they got fair value for Prospel though

Anonymous said...

Boyle got $6.66 million per year. Hope that wrist holds up. Prospal got shipped, then returned to the Lightning. I wouldn't be surprised if that happened again. The Bolts have to (and I suspect will) ship Richards to make room under the cap to accommodate the Danny Boy deal.

Shit, truth be told, I'd love to see either of those guys in a Caps sweater.

Allen Popels said...

The Caps are not going to make the playoffs. Move Eminger, Erskine, Pettinger, and Bradley for picks. Give Lepisto, Bourque, Fehr, and Andrew Gordon experience this season so that they are ready to go next year. Even Boumedienne

Anonymous said...

Minor clarification: Boyle got $40 million for 6 years.

Anonymous said...

Gary,
Thanks for the clarification. 40 mil over 6 is a little better for Tampa but it's still too much. I guess they're pretty confident they can move Richards either tomorrow or over the summer.

Capitals Fanatic,
The Caps have enough picks and prospect depth that I don't think they need to add a ton more picks(although I wouldn't want them to give any away either). Plus I don't think any of those players would get much in return

Allen Popels said...

The point is not what you get in return, it's to open up spots for deserving prospects. Give them experience this year so they are in better position to contribute next year.

Hooks Orpik said...

Gary---Thanks for correcting me. As usual my fingers were moving faster than my brain. Sorry to everyone who read my mis-info.

FAUX RUMORS said...

1) Bolts WAY over paid for Boyle. He's pretty good offensivel, but he's no Dion Pheneuf! It also pretty much cements the Sabres having to trade Campbell
2) Do teams not learn?? You over pay for one guy it weakens the team in other areas. The Lightning have no goalie. Now they also are forced to trade Brad Richards, and every GM knows it so they're going to get significantly less than market value as a result.

Anonymous said...

Gary,
I'd be shocked if Prospal returned to the Bolts. He and Torts have had a very public hate-fest going on for the entire season. But I agree, he's a guy I wouldn't mind in a Caps sweater.

NS said...

B. Jackman is off the market =/

I would have liked to see him (or Mike Komiserek) in a Caps jersey

Anonymous said...

Re: Tortorella & Prospal. There was an almost untenable situation back during Lecavalier's first few seasons; they hated each other. That resolved itself, and they ended up with the Cup. It's Jay Feaster's job to make the moves, so it wouldn't surprise me terribly if Prospal had a 3rd stint in Tampa (look at Gratton, if you must).

Then again, who says Tortorella's going to stay behind the bench down there?

NS said...

Havlat is now on the trading block...$6mil per year...

worth giving up some picks (and Flash/Pettinger/Eminger/Schultz)??

JP said...

Salvador (STL) <-> Janssen (NJD)

There goes a cheap defenseman who can hit...

@Gary
"Re: Tortorella & Prospal. There was an almost untenable situation back during Lecavalier's first few seasons; they hated each other. That resolved itself, and they ended up with the Cup."

Yeah, but Vinny never went on the post-game interview that was broadcast live to the hometown fans and said that he'd like to shove his two goal performance up Tortorella's ass. :-)

From today's Tampa Tribune:
“Moving Prospal, who has a career-high 29 goals this season, was a plan Feaster had in mind for some time, and the 32-year-old forward didn't help his cause Feb. 12 when he publicly expressed his frustration toward the coaching staff in a postgame interview broadcast inside the arena.”

Anonymous said...

Havlat is a good player, but I don't know if he's worth six million to the Capitals, who still need to re-sign Morrisonn, Green, Laich and Gordon and will probably need to shell out a little money for a goalie this offseason.

It'll be interesting to see what Havlat will fetch it he's traded though

NS said...

true, DMG. but it would be a hell of an acquisition.

Semin-Nyles-Havlat?? love it.

i personally don't really think Gordon is worth much. Not impressed.

Laich needs to stay for a while.

Morrison can be replaced pretty easily as well. Don't get me wrong, i like the way he plays and he has some good speed. Alzner & Green instead.

i think Teddy needs to make a move for a guaranteed impact player like that

JP said...

Wade Belak (TOR) <-> Florida's 5th round pick in 2008

JP said...

And I'd pass on Havlat. Guy's made of glass.

JP said...

Note on Cam Janssen (traded earlier to St. Louis) - his one goal in 95 career games was against the Caps. Good riddance. :)

JP said...

Brian Campbell (BUF) <-> San Jose... more to follow

JP said...

Brian Campbell (BUF) <-> Steve Bernier (SJS), 1st Round pick

JP said...

Pierre just rumored Fedorov to the Caps.

JP said...

Brad Richards, Johan Holmqvist (TB) <-> Mike Smith, Jussi Jokinen, Jeff Halpern (DAL)

JP said...

Huet to the Caps for a second!

Anonymous said...

So they pulled the trigger on Richards.

Which side wins on the Holmqvist / Smith part of the deal?

Anonymous said...

Huet. Wow, didn't see that one coming...

Anonymous said...

Huet? What does this mean for the Kolzig/Johnson tandem?

NS said...

FCK YEAH!!! love Huet

Fedorov is one of my favorite all time players...i will lose it if we get him, even for a season.

Pensblog Staff said...

guys love the Huet trade for you...

huge

JP said...

For more on Huet, head to the post on him. Or stay here. Whatevs.

Unknown said...

If Johnson doesn't get traded today or during the draft, I'd say this is Kolzig's last year as a Capital.

I think it's a great trade at the moment. Goaltending was going to be the issue for this team moving forward into next year with Kolzig's status (and subpar play) in question.

Anonymous said...

Great deal for the Caps to get Huet. I can't believe that the Habs want to put so much pressure on a 20-year old, they have a shot to be the #1 seed in the East. Price is proving to be a superb prospect, but to give him this kind of responsibility, you might as well predict the date of his melt down and desire to be traded...

Anonymous said...

Huet for a 2nd...that's money. Especially when we have 18 2nd round picks.

Unknown said...

I should point out that I am a big Kolzig fan and wear his number on my sweater. But I am very pleased with the trade.

Sonia said...

i still don't believe this huet trade is real. there is more to it. THERE HAS TO BE

Hooks Orpik said...

Can't wait to see what this means for Olie...

Also if Montreal doesn't bring a goalie back are they really going to go into the playoffs with a 20 year old goalie who was in the minors in the playoffs?

Hooks Orpik said...

*in the minors a couple of weeks ago.

My fingers aren't working so well on Steve Eminger Emancipation Day.

Anonymous said...

Carolina has traded Andrew Ladd for Tuomo Ruutu (Chicago). Good deal for both teams.

JP said...

Olie to Ottawa?

meep_42 said...

Holy crap. Who loves GMGM now?
(I seriously wish my job didn't block just about every cool website...)

Unknown said...

Re: Olie to Ottawa.

There's plenty of good players from that team I wouldn't mind getting in return. I'd be upset for Olie, but at least he might have a chance at the Cup.

Montreal fans are in shock and disbelief. Rightly so. Remember our twenty something Carey? He fizzled after his Vezina season into hockey oblivion.

Whiter Mage said...

I'd have mixed emotions about sending Olie to Ottawa. I'd rather see BJ go. However, if we were to trade Olie for Anton Vermette/Redden or a Philips/Volchenkov kinda guy...ugh, I can't believe I'm thinking that and not mad at myself. But oh man.

Dan, Jr. said...

Montreal unloaded Huet to help make room for Hossa?

Hooks Orpik said...

TSN just announced Fedorov is a Cap!!!!

meep_42 said...

Well, I guess we have a 2nd line pivot now... hope the price wasn't high...

Can't say I'm excited about it, though.

Whiter Mage said...

Holy Shit Sergei Fedorov

Anonymous said...

Fedorov to the Caps. It's about time GMGM addressed the absence of Nylander!

Hooks Orpik said...

Daniel, I would be excited if I were you...Fedorov may be up there in age and a shell of what he used to be, but he's still a great skater, a veteran presence and perhaps most importantly a Russian.

I can't under-state how important previous playoff experience is--look how quickly my young Pens got dispatched by a more veteran team last year.

With Nylander's injury there was obviously a huge hole on the team for skilled centers. Consider it filled.

Anonymous said...

waiting to hear what we gave...semi nervous. Hopefully Eminger

Anonymous said...

These are some huge moves by the Caps. So much for standing pat, huh?

Anonymous said...

Who the hell is Theo Ruth?

meep_42 said...

Hooks,

My concern is twofold:

1. He's a rental. I'm not a big fan in general of rentals when your team isn't likely to get into / get far in the playoffs. Obviously Ted and GMGM have other concerns that go beyond this year's results and go into the revenue/fan implications, but as far as I'm concerned, meh.

2. I don't know what we gave up yet -- if it's high draft picks/prospects I'll be more upset than if it's players we've targeted as expendable.

Maybe I'm wrong - maybe I'm not taking into account what we got in Huet into the equation, but my gut feeling is to not be too excited. (Though I have to admit, Fedorov's 5 goals vs. the Caps was one of the most impressive individual hockey performances I've ever seen)

-d

Sonia said...

they mean ted ruth- i think the caps drafted him this past summer.

meep_42 said...

Ok, that price isn't bad considering our D prospects/players right now.

I'm on board with this one. Color me officially excited.

JP said...

Cooke for Pettinger

Anonymous said...

Buh-bye, Princess. Seems to me to be a minor upgrade.

meep_42 said...

A very minor upgrade...

Is there any financial motivation behind this? I don't see enough of a change to make the trade based on the players alone, personally...

-d

Anonymous said...

I'll take 16 points and a -4 over 7 points and a -11... at least for the final 19 games or so...

meep_42 said...

They're both about 100pt/300gm players, only Cooke gets 3x the penalties... (I have no idea what the ice-time differences may be)

-d

Anonymous said...

Fedorov is exactly what we need. We only need a rental if we expect Nylander to be back next year. No one has stepped up to fill Nylander's shoes and that has hurt our secondary scoring. Fedorov is pretty much exactly what we needed on the offensive front and then we have no obligations after this year and we can essentially "trade him out" for Nylander.

Unknown said...

Maybe there is more to the story than we know with Petty. Maybe GMGM wanted to get his career back on track by trading him (far away).

Seems like a wash from a statistical perspective. Maybe GMGM is reading the blogs? Nah...who am I kidding.

Now if we could get Hal Gill from the Leafs, I'd be more than happy.

Sonia said...

Tradecentre just had Pettinger on the phone- he sounds fairly excited to go to Vancouver. maybe a change will do him good!

Anonymous said...

I just screamed in the middle of class.

Anonymous said...

can't wait to see Federov in a Caps uni. He was/is my favorite player when I was littler.

JP said...

Word is Hossa to Pitt.

Joe said...

Pettinger is already gone off the Caps website official roster. I love this time of year.

Hooks Orpik said...

JP don't toy with my emotions like that...

~Mark said...

Wow, so possibilities remaining:

Olie to Ottawa for ????
Hal Gil from Toronto for Eminger and ???

JP said...

@ Hooks: I think we'd all have an emotional reaction to that one.

@ Mark: Please no on Gill. Seriously.

~Mark said...

From Vogs blog: "Talks are ongoing, and there’s still time on the clock. We may or may not be finished here."
So George is still working, and I have to think a D-man is a MUST HAVE for a team clearly making the push. I also don't see how all 3 goalies are staying here.

JP said...

Gill to PIT.

JP said...

Hossa to PIT for Esposito, Armstrong and Christensen

Unknown said...

The Pens just got much more scarier.

Anonymous said...

That seems like a lot for PIT to give up...

I'm not excited about seeing Colby Armstrong more

~Mark said...

@ted
As did your English.

Pierre McGuire hates the Hossa deal for the Pens. Sweet. :-)

Sonia said...

the pens sure gave up a whole lot for hossa...bad move on their part. horay! :D

Hooks Orpik said...

I'm stunned.

Huge price to pay for what could be a rental. But I guess the front office knows more than I do.

Armstrong was Crosby's best friend and roommate on the road.

Huge deal.

Wow.

~Mark said...

More about the Hossa deal:

Remember on July 1st; the NY Rangers will win the Stanley Cup, no question.
This is not a guaranteed Cup final berth folks.

Anonymous said...

Mark -

Either way, that sucks. I don't particularly want ATL getting any better either. But I guess I'd rather see PIT get hosed

Unknown said...

~Mark.

Sorry.. more scary.

:)

~Mark said...

So, now the "Malkin Art Ross chase" just gives up more ice-time to another point-getter.

Anonymous said...

Pascal Dupuis is in there from ATL too (according to TSN)

Anonymous said...

I guess we're going to stand pat with three 'tenders, then.

JP said...

Dupuis also heads to PIT and a first heads back to Atlanta.

Frankly, I like the deal for PIT. They gave up a couple of third-liners , a flop of a prospect and a low first-round pick for one of the best all-around players in the League.

Something tells me Sid will get over the loss of Army.

Good job, Wads - I'm sure you couldn't have squeezed more out of Montreal or Ottawa. Jackass.

Anonymous said...

I like our route better than Pittsburghs

JP said...

How can you not love the Hossa trade for PIT? They've been the best team in the East since New Year's, and they just added the best player that moved today (and it's not even close).

Montreal got worse.

Ottawa's goaltending is a joke.

New Jersey is the other top team in the Conference and now we'll see if offense beats goaltending.

I love it for PIT.

Abhinav said...

I like the move a lot for Pittsburgh though I'd be surprised if they can afford to resign Hossa.

Btw, that I like it means I totally hate it.

Victor said...

Wild acquire F Chris Simon from the Islanders in exchange for a sixth round pick (tsn.ca)

Isn't Simon still suspended?

Anonymous said...

Yeah JP that makes sense...

but I hate PIT so I hate it for PIT

NS said...

PIT is scary right now. 3 elite forwards on one team.

great trade for the Pens.

Whiter Mage said...

You can like it for this season...but when you consider the Caps improved probably just as much, and maybe more, while not giving away anything, and the Pens gave away Crosby's roommate, a shootout hound, and a first rounder for a rental?

Pierre McGuire makes sense.

Anonymous said...

It's a good move if it gets the Pens at least to the conference finals. If not, it's a bust and I think you'll see some upset penguins

But, since it's Pittsburg, I'm sure they will win the cup and resign everyone. And probably beat us in the first round. just to rub salt in the wounds

Hooks Orpik said...

I'm with you, JP, I like the deal.

--Army's my boy and all but his ceiling is a 3rd line winger.

--EC is a great shootout guy but the Pens have too much center depth to fit in and he didn't work on the wing.

--Esposito is a very "boom or bust" type prospect. And, like I've said it would have been difficult for him at center too since he hasn't been comfortable on the wing too.

It's a lot to give up if Hossa walks this summer but the East is wide open and as JP mentioned that of the top teams, Pittsburgh was the only one to improve their team. And in a big way.

I also like that the two teams I follow the closest easily did the most to improve themselves today.

Congrats on the acquisitions Cap fans, sorry the Pens (as always) had to steal the thunder at the last minute ;)

Anonymous said...

I actually feel the Caps added alot.
I know Fedorov is a rental but when we have a healthy Nyles we wont need him anyway.
The Caps addressed goaltending in a big way.
Im also pleased (and surprised) the Caps addressed toughness by adding Cooke.

Unknown said...

Not so fast Hooks, we just re-obtained Alexandre Giroux!

Anonymous said...

Motzko for Giroux?

Whiter Mage said...

Cooke is oh man. We need the grit, and he has it in spades. I can't wait.

Anonymous said...

What's the possibility that one of the goalies is a healthy scratch? Tried to find any rules pertaining to this but no luck

Anonymous said...

3 good young players and a 1strounder in a very deep draft for 2 months of Hossa plus Dupuis. To me this doesn't look like a good trade for the Pens. Remember, the Pens last season also added a lot at the deadline and then went on to win one playoff game.
Wadell raided the Pens, he is the winner of this year's deadline.
