Wednesday Roundup/Gamenight: Thrashers @ Caps

[AP Preview - WashingtonCaps.com Preview]

If the Caps could pick an opponent for tonight's game, they'd no doubt choose to host one of the League's worst teams with that team coming off a physical road win the night before. So when they welcome the Atlanta Thrashers (fresh off a win in Toronto in which even Ilya Kovalchuk dropped the mittens) to the VC tonight, the 'quality of competition' excuse will officially be off the table before the opening puck drops - if the Caps lose tonight, it won't be to the better team, regardless of how many Hershey Bears are in the lineup for the boys in red.

Atlanta, prior to last night's out-pouring of offense, was 18th in the League in goals per game, 29th in goals against per game, and had the League's third-worst penalty kill. And yet here's a stat that will make any Division rival take notice of the Thrash in a hurry - they're currently 4-0-2 against Southeast foes, a mark, of course, that includes a 7-4 Opening Night win against their opponents on this Thanksgiving Eve game.

The Thrashers will likely start Ondrej Pavalec in net after playing Johan Hedberg last night (Kari Lehtonen, you'll be utterly shocked to find out, is currently injured). Pavelec is 2-2-0/2.32/.913 on the season, and was fantastic in a 2-1 overtime win last season in what has been the only time he has faced the Caps to date. The Caps haven't yet announced a starter, but both Jose Theodore (1-1-1/4.26/.867 in his last three) and Brent Johnson (0-2-0/5.05/.831 in his last two) got lit up by Atlanta back in October, and neither has given up fewer than three goals in a game since the last time the team was home (where they still have not lost in regulation), six games ago. Flip a coin and hope that a depleted defense actually helps out whomever's between the pipes.

Given the proximity to Turkey Day and the opponent, one can't help but be reminded of the 5-1 drubbing the Thrash handed the Caps amid prescient chants of "Fire Hanlon" raining down from the rafters last year at this time. One year later, regardless of how tonight's game turns out, Caps fans have plenty to be thankful for tomorrow. But two points tonight will sure make that pumpkin pie taste all the sweeter, won't it?

Elsewhere 'Round the Rinks:

Another translation (and a new website) for TuvanHillbilly.... Sweet photo of Michal Neuvirth from his 36-save shutout of Mississippi on Sunday night (h/t StP)... Brett Leffler is off to a good start for Regina.... Finally, if you want to hear me talk Caps with a guy whose silky smooth voice makes me sound even more like a stuttering 14-year-old than normal, I did a spot on the Dobber Nation Radio Show earlier in the week (and thanks again to those guys for having me on).

Friday Roundup/Gamenight: Caps @ Thrash

[AP Preview - WashingtonCaps.com Preview]

Opening Night on a Friday in Atlanta (for the second straight year) with reigning Jack Adams Trophy winner Bruce Boudreau behind one bench and his buddy John Anderson behind the other, the NHL's top two goal scorers from a season ago firing pucks at every opportunity... and likely a bunch of empty seats (limited interest in Becoming One in Blueland?).

As these two teams are tied in the standings for quite possibly the last time all season, let's take a quick look at some of the current Caps' successes that have come at Atlanta's expense:
You get the point. But here's the bigger point - none of that matters much right now. Alex Ovechkin has no goals, Nicklas Backstrom no assists, Alex Semin hasn't fallen down once yet, and Jose Theodore has no wins - the Washington Capitals have no wins.

But there will be wins, stats and moments aplenty to collect over the next six-plus months. And it all starts tonight, at long last.

Elsewhere 'Round the Rinks:

Brooks Laich was on the Big O and Dukes show yesterday (Segment 6).... Everybody wants to see what AO does for an encore.... Thanks to sk8 for this former Cap update.... Caps prospect Brett Leffler potted a pair of goals in his return from a concussion, but it sounds like his head may not be 100% right quite yet.... Finally, on a personal note, it was four years ago today that my wonderful wife and I said our "I do's." Re-confirming that I made the right decision then, she's totally fine with just watching the game tonight. I'm a lucky man.

Snip Snip

Joel Broda, Stefan Della Rovere, Dmitry Kugryshev, Brett Leffler, Eric Mestery and Justin Taylor have been returned by the Caps to their junior teams.

In other roster news, Kris Beech didn't make the Pens and Jamie Heward got cut by the Bolts.

Dinner With This Year's Top Draft Prospects

Thanks to Jes for forwarding me a copy of the NHL Entry Draft Media Guide for 2007 (which apparently anyone can download here - warning: PDF). Rather than go all Mel Kiper on you (at this point, at least), I figured I'd help you get to know some of these kids, and what better way to get to know them than to see which three people they'd most like to have dinner with?

If you want some raw data, skip to the bottom. Otherwise, here they are, by prospect, in alphabetical order (with a little added info, where appropriate):
  • Akim Aliu - nicknamed "Dream," Akim is trying to become the first Nigerian-born NHLer. Hopefully he finds the same success in North America as another similarly-named African-born gent (him or him - take your pick). As for his dinner guests, Bobby Orr, Steve Yzerman and Gordie Howe.
  • Jean-Simon Allard - Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky and President George Bush. Does he mean Bush 41 or Bush 43? Because if it's the former, yeah, that would be an awesome dinner, but the latter? Not sure they'd have a lot to talk about.)
  • Aaron Alphonso - Sacha Baron Cohen, Tiger Woods, Muhammad Ali
  • Karl Alzner - Scott Niedermayer, Owen Wilson, Taylor Swift.
  • Keith Aulie - Gretzky, Jessica Simpson and Sidney Crosby because "they are all amazing people." Indeed.
  • Roman Bashkirov - Maria Sharapova (pictured). That's it. Well played.
  • Ruslan Bashkirov - Roman's twin brother, he would see his brother's Sharapova and raise him a Gretzky and a Vladimir Putin for dinner.
  • Jamie Benn - Joe Sakic, Gretzky, Babe Ruth
  • Ben Blood - Orr, Vince Vaughn, Herb Brooks
  • Jon Blum - Woods, Lance Armstrong, Simpson
  • Nick Bonino - Larry David, Bush, Brendan Shanahan
  • Robert Bortuzzo - Orr, Armstrong, Bob Probert
  • Drayson Bowman - Armstrong, Lemieux, Kiefer Sutherland
  • T.J. Brennan - his dad, Dion Phaneuf, Woods
  • Bryan Cameron - Yzerman, Andrew Raycroft ("to learn how to
    score more goals"), Will Ferrell
  • Max Campbell - Pavel Bure, Gretzky, Adam Sandler
  • Trevor Cann - Gretzky, Yzerman, Armstrong
  • Luca Caputi - Richard Simmons (pictured), Simpson, Freddie Mercury. Best answer yet, by far (and I see where you're going with your invites, Luca... crafty).
  • Paul Carey - Armstrong, Bono, Al Gore. Apparently we're into the tree hugger portion of the alphabet.
  • Jordy Christian - Woods, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Andrew Clark - Yzerman
  • Colby Cohen - Donovan McNabb, Chris Pronger, John LeClair. Cohen is Jeremy Bloom's cousin and, as you can probably tell from his dinner guests, a Philly guy.
  • Ian Cole - Woods, Keith Magnuson, Ali
  • Logan Couture - Willis McGahee, Barry Bonds, Evangeline Lilly
  • Tommy Cross - Nicklas Lidstrom, Bush, his mom (Cross's, not Bush's)
