In Search Of The $4.50 Beer

In these tough economic times, isn't it good to know that the Verizon Center supposedly has the second-cheapest beer prices in the NHL (not to mention the sixth-lowest "Fan Cost Index" in the League), all despite being located in the middle of one of the most expensive cities in the country?

The FCI study aside, we're skeptical - precisely where in the VC can you get a 16-ounce beer for $4.50?

H/t to Puck Daddy on the link

Update: Puck Daddy has much more on League-wide beer prices.

where are these $4.50 beers?

That's what I'm sayin nuft. They're $7.50 this year and they were $7.00 last season. Maybe it's some sort of weird conversion.

I was wondering the same, so I've updated the post to reflect our collective skepticism.

Also worth noting - on a per ounce basis, it appears (on a very quick glance and doing the math in my head) that Pittsburgh has cheaper beer.

1) $4.50?? Haven't seen beer that cheap at any hockey venue since the 1990's! Hooks is corerect VC raised its beer price .50 after several seasons at 7.00. Didn't notice 50 cents worth of improvement in service. ; )

I'm thinking at the Green Turtle maybe?

@ JP -

Sure it's cheaper, but how many people with functioning taste buds want 16oz of Iron City on a regular basis?

@ WC: Ha. I was going to make an IC joke, but as someone who has had his fair share of Natty Boh's, I passed.

It's $7.50 for 24oz. So, it's $5.00 for 16 oz. this year. Not bad considering bar prices in DC. Hooks can go back to Pittsburgh and relive the 80s and drink 1/2 barrels of IC for under $30. Acid wash jeans and mullets are still in style too. Let's hit Chauncey's at Station Square!

I saw that, too. And wondered the same thing. The best I can find is Yuengling for $7.50.

Perhaps for $4.50 they let you smell it.

Uhh, I think they meant to head that "beer" column "diet coke", since $4.50 is the going rate for one at the Phone Booth...

i miss $7/7.50 beers. i went to a rangers preseason game a couple weeks ago and before i knew what i was doing, i had put down $8.75 for a beer. not just any beer- COORS LIGHT. i am still really angry about this!

Y'all are missing the point. It costs you $7.50 for a "beer purchase." But the cups are 24 ounces (or so I'm told...I'm not paying $7.50 for a beer).

If a "serving" is 14.5 ounces, you are paying $4.50 (rounded) for a "beer."

Voila!

Maybe it's $4.50 for the beer and $3 for the cup.

Ok so I did some math here and I don't think that it's out of line for $7.50 @ 24oz for domestics @ Verizon Center.

That's $3.75 for each 12oz.

If you get 3 beers - which is equivalent to a 6 pack, you're shelling out $22.50 for that.

Doing a relational comparison to RFD which serves domestics on tap in a 16oz pint glass (which is rarely filled to the brim - so I'd argue it's roughly 12oz. and a splash that you end up getting anyways) for $4.00. That would get you to $24.00 for 6 of those, not to mention you would be adding a tip on that.

I would argue you get better bang for your buck @ verizon center on domestic beer on tap than @ RFD
