Tuesday Roundup

What a mixed bag of injury news yesterday brought. The good news was that Alex Semin, Brent Johnson and Chris Clark all skated. The unsurprising bad news was that Tom Poti and Brian Pothier did not. The surprising bad news was that neither did Michael Nylander, and Matt Pettinger had to leave practice early (though both Nyls and Petty are expected to play Wednesday night, despite the former's shoulder injury allegedly being "worse than the team is letting on"). Oh, and Ben Clymer is on re-entry waivers, which I guess would qualify as unexpected bad news if he's going to be wearing red, white and blue anytime soon.

Got all that? Good. And if Ben Clymer skates a single shift on defense for this team with Steve Eminger in the press box...

Elsewhere 'Round the Rinks:

On this date back in 1984, Bengt Gustafsson lit the lamp five times (on five shots, no less) in a 7-1 trouncing of the Flyers in Philly. Gus ended his career with 196 goals (and only one other hat trick) in 629 games, but his was probably not the least likely five-goal performance in the past 25 years. And speaking of five-goal games, what's the over/under date on when Alex Ovechkin gets his first? Let's see, the Caps next get Tampa on February 16, right?

I don't see Ovy getting 5 goals for a while. The Caps don't score 6+ all that often (Ottawa games not withstanding). Not until we have two solid scoring lines.

Then again, Russian Machine does not need second scoring line.

1) Carolina is apparently VERY desperate. They picked up Samsonov today. Its like Sergei's 10th team in the past year, or something like that. ; )

I dunno why everyone keeps on loving the Eminger bandwagon. He's not a great defenseman, and it shows when he sits up in the press box and when he's on the ice.

1) Whiter: Probably most aren't so much on his bandwagon as they are perplexed why they have treated him the way they have. He's still only 23 and its probably be a bit early to give up on him
2) All things considered, he's complained very little about his situation. Of course there are 1 million reasons he shouldn't be too upset.
3) Its hard to say if he's good/decent/sucks based upon his work from this season.
