Monday Roundup

How 'bout a nice open thread to help you all heal your groins, tail bones and undisclosed upper body parts? See, doesn't that feel better already?

Elsewhere 'Round the Rinks:

Happy 36th Birthday to Donald Brashear.... Verizon Center isn't the only NHL rink with ice problems (h/t to KK on the link).... Plenty of Karl Alzner coverage (notably here and here, with a bit more here that includes a mention of Josh Godfrey) in the wake of the World Juniors.... Hey! The Caps won something completely meaningless!... Finally, on this date back in 1989, Mike Ridley assisted on all six Caps goals in a 6-3 win over Chicago. Rids' six helpers are still a single-game team record.

1) Maybe we missed them, but any stories on how Michael Neuvirth did? Saw a brief note that he played very well for the host Czechs who finished 5th due to a lack of scoring.
2)Did Simeon Varlamov play for Russia?

The Wiz play on Tues, the Caps on Wednesday. Any truth to the rumor that the Caps/VC have brought more air conditioning units online recently to get the building colder? Because the NHLPA boss is right: It IS warm in VC on gamenights.

@faux,

1. Neuwirth finished 4th in SV% with .910 and by all accounts played well.
2. I watched some of the TSN coverage of the Sweden/Russia game and they mentioned that because of his terrible "Super Series" effort, Varlamov wasn't even on the team. Yikes.

Some are suggesting that Varlamov wasn't invited because he signed a contract with the Caps, because his last performance in the Super Series was actually pretty good. Babrovsky (sp?) was good, but Varlamov is the better goalie and it would have been interesting to see where he could have taken them (especially to see the potential Varlamov/Neuvirth matchup that never was).

Was anyone else as amazed as I was at Stuart's goal? I guess part of it was just the Sabres underestimating him, but he seriously pulled a Mike Green there, it was very impressive.

Is anyone else a little concerned with how many times little Nicky Backstrom is the recipient of a big hit?
