Your NHL Stars For The Week

With seven points in three games, Alex Ovechkin has been named the third star of the week by the NHL. Not mentioned in the NHL's blurb? Number Eight was first second on the team with nine hits. (Thanks for edit, Joe.)

I think he was also the team leader in hair length.

Hate to rain on the parade but Jucina had 11 hits in the last 3 games.

Sorry, Jurcina

anyone else bang their head on the nearest hard surface every time AO has a shot blocked, which is all the time?

Doh! Quite correct, Joe. Jerky with 11, Ovie with 9.

ns, AO had 19 shots blocked last week. Jurcina and Pothier were next with 4 each.

I hate being right sometimes, but it seemed like OV got shortchanged on Tuesday against Tampa. He looked like he was flying around hitting everything but was only credited with 1 hit. On the other hand, Jerky has been absolutely crushing people. Its fun to watch too.

The NHL has never figured out how to 'standardize' those hit stats.

I was told the reason hit stats never seem to match up with what we see on the ice is because the NHL only credits a player with a hit when the hit causes a turnover. Anybody know whether this is indeed the case?

Interesting, errantelf. I hadn't heard that, but I have heard that since it's a relatively discretionary call, home team management sometimes discourages counting a lot of hits, since it drives up their players' salaries come free agent time. Frankly, that's a bit conspiratorial for me to believe, but I've heard it, so I throw it out there.
