Willis Reed in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals.
Lance Armstrong in the 1999 Tour de France.
Curt Schilling in Game 4 of the 2004 American League Championship Series.
Sidney Crosby in Game 3 of the 2007 NHL season.
Word out of Pittsburgh is that the Pens captain will play tonight "bruised foot and all." Sure, Jason Blake's playing with cancer, but Sid's gonna give it a go with black and blue metatarsals! Huzzah!

A tale to rank him up there with Bobby Baun, I'm sure.
let's not get carried away here in blasting all things Secondary Sid. Truth is, its harder to play with a bad wheel than with Blake's condition.
Agreed - it's just a little good-natured ribbing. In fact, it's much more an indictment of the media's portrayal than of Sid himself. And if AO had a bruised foot, I'd certainly want regular updates on his status. Then again, if AO had a bruised foot, it probably would have been the result of him kicking so much ass.
Come on, anon, it's all in good fun.
The Caps have Captain Cadaver. The Pens? Captain...Captain Contusion?
Dude??? Why did you steal my avatar????
Matt Drudge made me do it!
And if it's so trivial, why does "SportsNation" have to run a poll on the topic?
Again, this is more about the media coverage than the athlete, but it's all a bit much, no?

niccccccce. on a random note, maybe related note, i think we need to implement WWOD? (What Would Ovie Do?)
the answer, most of the time, would be "kick ass"
AO bruising a foot would generally mean he's playing defense.
Thus why this never happens.
@ Anon: Right. Those three shots he blocked against Carolina were his own teammates shots that he blocked in the offensive zone.
@ NS: Makes me think of this.
Methinks anonymous has not yet watched a Caps game this season. Or read one of the several articles praising Ovechkin for his new focus on defense.
You're living in the past, man.
norske, I don't think anyone in the hockey media are watching Caps games. Sure, we'd like to see more goals for from them, especially on those PPs the last few games, but the season is still young.
I'm waiting for an AO hat trick, and can't wait to see what 19 contributes this season.
