"Nylander To Edmonton" Not A Done Deal


I just spoke with Allan Watt, the Oilers VP of Communications, and he confirmed that the Michael Nylander deal has not been signed.
The deal is done when [GM] Kevin Lowe tells me it's done.
When asked what the impediments to an agreement were, Watt said, "It could be any number of things," including that Nylander was still listening to offers from other clubs.

Watt was unable to explain Bob Stauffer's (Team 1260) report that an agreement had been reached.

Update (3:02): A second radio station in Edmonton, 630 CHED, is now reporting that Nylander has agreed to 4 years with the Oilers. Salary was not disclosed. Streaming audio of their news/sports reports on the half hour available here. Hear it and weep.

Update (4:42): Nylander is a Cap. What a ride.

    I admire your initiative in picking up the phone and trying to get some info on the Nylander deal. I suspected Nylander would listen to more offers, especially from Eastern clubs. Seems like everyone is just waiting for tsn to report it: I think they're all hungover and sleeping in from Canada Day festivities.

    Nice job guys - I had a feeling something was up when no one was reporting anything other than what the radio station had stated.

    Considering every FA signing has been listed on the tracker, things obviously aren't as close as they had seemed.

    According to the NY papers, he's received offers in excess of $20 mil for 4 years. I'm guessing he'll go somewhere between $5 - $5.5 in this market.

    So, how much would you be willing to spend on him?

    I'd give him more money for a shorter term - $18m/3 years. Is it overpaying? Well, not if that's what the market price is. But this team has the cap room, the deep pockets and the need for the guy. It would make sense, imo.

    JP, I was thinking the same thing about the 3 year/18 million deal. The real killer in these deals is the term. I'd rather overpay early than be stuck with a 38-year old washout getting $5 million a year.

    If Nylander falls through, I hope for Handzus. Strong defensively. Big body. Good passer who has scored 20+ goals without a lot of offensive talent around him in recent years.

    If the Caps are going to be a playoff team, the top line can't be -25. Handzus addresses that.

    Is Handzus a winger or a center? Or is he adept at either position. I saw him listed as RW somewhere, so I am confused.

    As long as he can make plays and distribute the puck, that's all I care about.

    Dude's never had 40 assists in a season. He brings a lot to the table, but first line playmaking ability isn't in his arsenal.

    Handzus can play both. He's not a huge assist guy, but he's super-strong defensively. And I can't see AO going -19 with Handzus around.

    I want Yashin... For some reason I think playing with Ovie would bring out the best with him, if only because Ovie gives 120% out there every night. And the fact that they're both Russian makes me think peer pressure might have an effect on him.

    Might not be the greatest example, but look how much better Semin did last year...

    Well, if its something around 4yrs @5M, I'm very glad he goes elsewhere. I agree with everybody that at this age term is key. I'd be very happy if the Caps got him for 2 years, 3 is pushing it, 4 - no way. It would suck beyond belief to pay 5M to a washed up 39 yrs old 2nd line center right when this team matures and you want to add the final pieces, especially if the Caps continue to operate significantly under the cap.

    Yashin is going to be a much better and much safer value, cause his term should be short. Get on it, McPhee. He's a lot more skilled than anybody who is left. And the possibility of him playing better on account of Ovechkin is a great bonus.

    That other Kozlov is much better on the wing too. As is, for that matter, Mike Comrie.

    I wish there was some way the Bolts would trade us Brad Richards - but not his entire salary (I know the CBA doesn't allow for that any more - but that's hardly the most unrealistic part of this fantasy).
