Confirmation from the team
As you know, I've been pimping the idea of Nylander's return for a couple of months now, so I'm elated by this news. Sure, the money is more than I had thought and the term is longer, but the fact remains that the Caps now have a legitimate first-line center, a veteran presence and a mentor all in one. Not bad.
And here's a thought - Alex Ovechkin scored 98 goals in his first two seasons with a converted winger as his pivot. Imagine what he'll do now.
Update: TSN.ca has the deal as 4-years/$19.5-million.

side note the word verification to post is way to long
Wow. Impressive work by the Caps. I can't wait to hear the whole story.
If you're an Oilers fan, you're absolutely gutted
HOLY SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIP
If you're an Oil fan you're absolutely going to gut Kevin Lowe.
I'd still like to see a 3L RW: Guerin, Nagy, Gelinas, etc.
Way to go JP!!! I didn't see anyone else with the "Nylander not signed yet" story. Everyone else just quoted the Fan or TSN or whoever got it wrong. Caps did good with this one. If he can stay healthy this time, I think it'll be a huge boost for AO to have Nylander and Kozlov/Clark out there with him. Sure beats Beech or Novotny.
I second what Jeff said on this blog making phone calls as the MSM mindlessly ditto'ed bad reports.
we dont need to sign a 3rd line rw, that would be overkill, right now were walking a nice line between rebuilding and FA. plus i think gordon pettinger clark would/could be one of the best 3rd lines in the league
I agree with Anon. I've always seen Clark as a gritty shut-em-down third liner and I hope Hanlon at least tries him out there.
Semin, Backstrom, and one of the up and comers on the right (Fehr or Flash) for the second line. Not too shabby at all.
As far as staying healthy, the Caps took care of that last year when they bought out Yonkman. He's the one that broke Nylander's leg.
The Caps' PP has dramatically improved in the last 30 hours.
any word on the $$ of the contract?
Still would like to see another move or two, but so far a pretty good offseason.
exactly what i thought tyler, very nice pp(in theory), and yea how much?
I really can't stand the Clark on the 3L talk. The guy put up 30 goals last year. And he missed a ton of time with injuries.
Further, Nylander is not a physical guy, and neither is Kozlov (from what I hear). Keep Clark on the line to score some goals, help on defense, and help protect Ovy.
Only way I'm okay with Koz on the 2L and Clark on the 3L is if one of the young guys plays well enough to play with Ovy/Nylander on the 1L.
Nyls is a swede too, right? Hooray for Backis having a fellow countryman on board.
I just love it! I now the term is too long and the money probably too much but I just love Nylander and I just KNOW he's gonna have great chemistry with Ovie, Semin, Backstrom!
The Richard-Trophy is officially Ovy's to lose!
GMGM has so far had a great off-season!
Tarik's update
Tarik's reporting it's $5.5. per for the first 3 years and then "less" for the fourth. So the caps shelled out $11.5MM for the players. I don't think they're going to be spending anymore. That brings them right around $40, right?
Here's a little Nylander video goodness for ya (courtesy of youtube):

I don't mind Nylander, although Jagr made him look better than he really was - IMHO. I think it's a great pickup from the Backstrom perspective, though
Still, it looks like a case of the sloppy seconds after Briere and Drury went off the board.
11.5 probably doesn't put them to the point of where they'd have to be done.
If they make a trade (or look to deal a player or two down the road) then they might have anywhere from 2-4 left to still make a move.
So next year it looks like...
Ovechkin---Nylander---Kozlov
Semin---Backstrom---Clark
Pettinger---Laich--Fleischmann
Brashear---Sutherby---Gordon
(LW) (C) (RW)
Clymer
Bradley
Jurcina---Poti
Morrisonn--Pothier
Schultz---Boumedienne
(DFD) (OFD)
Emminger
Green
Giddy...dancing...singing...after spending all day in jury duty and coming home to reports of Nylander to the Oilers, this truly made my day.
Joe: I would actually like to see Schultz with Pothier - I think Hanlon tried that combo towards the end of the year last season and imo it was the best Pothier played all year (relative, I know, but I liked it).
joe, i think you got the whole gordon-laich thing waaaay messed up there
Just noticed: The NYR have over $20M in cap space going to Cs next year.
That wooshing noise you're hearing is a collective sigh of relief!
Way to keep 'em honest JP!
1. Don't quite understand the "Jagr made Nylander look good" talk. It takes two players to make each look good. Nylander will make OV look real good!
2. Curious to learn of OV's reaction. What do you think? I think he is probably VERY happy. Nylander for two years or so, than Backstrom as his center. Not bad!
In watching Nylander play last year, what impressed me so much was that it was NOT Jagr making him look good, it was quite the opposite. And then often, it was Nylander taking things into his own hands and getting the job done while Jagr wandered around somewhere away from the play. This is what made me think we needed someone like Nylander on the Caps, though I never really thought we'd get him.
I'm very happy with this pickup - please don't let us down, Michael.
umm, what the deuce?
