Something's Cookin'

Vogs sat down with GMGM last night and got some good info, including the following:

Do you have anything really concrete in the works, something that you’d like to do that you’re maybe just waiting for the other team to nod their head on?

“We have one proposal that may make sense for our club. We’ll take another discussion or two with the other club, and we’ll see. But it might work.”

Is this something you could see going down before 7 or 8 o’clock Friday night?

“Yes.”

Do you see even more trade discussions happening after Saturday but before July 1 on the trade front?

“Yes. We had one discussion with a club that was interested in doing something with [our] players. But they said, ‘We’d like to focus on the draft this week and we’ll talk about that next week.’”

If there's a trade you've gotta figure it's for a D, right? All those Cs available on the FA market and all.

Who knows? A guy like Marleau is out there for trade, perhaps.

But we do know that the Habs want to move up to snag Esposito. Maybe they send their pick (12th), the rights to negotiate with Souray and something else to the Caps for the #5 pick. That Philly/Nashville trade puts a lot of scenarios in play.

Well that's true. Marleau is the one C I've hoped is on our trade radar. But there are still a lot more top-level Cs on the FA market than there are D.

And Souray (career year) makes me nervous. I mean, one big year...

Sportsnet/Sun Media says that Edmonton wants Sam Gagner -- and they pick one behind the C-needy Caps...

I don't like Souray. At all.

His wife, on the other hand...

No. 28 and Klepis for Mrs. Souray. She could lead the Caps Ice Girls team.

At the risk of having my bogging privileges permanently revoked by the International Brotherhood of Hockey Bloggers, I read this and remembered an Eklund brain fart about an Edmonton connection and thought, "hmm...maybe Ales Hemsky."

It'd tak a helluva deal, given Hemsky's cap-friendly contract, but it would be a coup -- enough to get folks to shut up about McPhee for a while (that is, until about 12:01 am, July 1)

Are those REAL?

Unknown said...

Semin-Backstrom-Hemsky? Uh, yeah. That'd be nice. But would GMGM do that straight-up for No. 5?

JP said...

Personally, I'd prefer someone a little more durable than Hemsky, but if you were talking Hemskey for the #5, the question I think you ask is "Is the guy we'd take at #5 going to be a better NHLer than Ales Hemsky?" Sure, there are other considerations, but Hemsky is a somewhat proven and more easily-projected commodity - which is more than you can say for any of these kids.

One thing is for sure - it's time to be bold.

Trading the #5 doesn't work in that scenario unless there is a specific set of circumstances. Edmonton picks sixth. If the Caps give an indication that they would pick a player Edmonton has specifically targeted, this deal works only if the Caps are not especially wedded to the player they would have picked at #5. If that is the case, they can consummate the deal and move on to the 28th pick.

But it's a reach.

Philly is looking to trade down and dump some salary, according to this:

...and...

The Caps might be able to move up take Turris and get a salary dump or two in exchange for their fifth and another of their picks in the first two rounds.

Speaking of Marleau:

Kuklas is linking to a Globe & Mail report that TOR is close to sending No. 13 to SJ for Toskala. (Pending a contract deal.) If SJ gets No. 13 (they don't have a 1 this year) they don't need the No. 5, which is our best chip to play for Marleau. Unless Steve Eminger...

OMG this is addictive. I'm almost sorry Faux(es) isn't here to gum it up. Almost.

i seriously doubt the Caps need ,let alone want, to move up higher than their 5th pick.

Personally, I would be ecstatic to see Hemsky w/ the Caps. Would Edmonton be dumb enough to move him???

oh, and i'll take one order of Marleau, please.

1) Tyler asks, we respond. We weighed in on the Marleau rumor here about a month or so ago: http://japersrink.blogspot.com/2007/05/accountability-guys.html
As well as on our own blog 3 weeks ago: http://newfaux.blogspot.com/2007/06/caps-center-of-attention.html#links

If GMGM has the stones/creativity/power of persuasion to get a guy like Marleau, I would drop dead.

FAUX RUMORS said...

1) Would Caps fans be upset for a Semin-Marleau even up swap?

Anonymous said...

I think that a trade with Ottawa for Redden is more likely

Unknown said...

Actually Faux(es) I wasn't so much 'asking' as I was 'exulting in your absence.'

FAUX RUMORS said...

1) Redden was probably Ottawa's worst defensemen in the playoffs. He's also signed for one more season at a whopping 6.5 million.

Anonymous said...

Redden has a NTC and has said he wants to stay in Ottawa.

FAUX RUMORS said...

1) If Redden has a NTC, and its likely he does, his agent would probably want something in return for waiving it( A lucritive extension comes to mind)

Semin for Marleau?

Yeah... No chance. Caps fans would roast McPhee alive.

NS said...

Faux - i would be upset with a straight marleau/semin trade. granted, we get a much need scoring/playmaking center, but you lose one of only 2 pure goal scorers on the Caps.

Considering the Caps are pretty barebones (IMO) when it comes to actual scorers, thats a high price to pay.

i wonder how much trouble the Caps will have with resigning Semin once his contract is up. kind of has me worried...

JP said...

Semin for Marleau would be absolutely horrible.

Marleau is a UFA after this coming season, Semin is an RFA. Huge difference, regardless of the fact that on-ice, it'd be just shifting deficiencies around a little bit.

Btw, I put up an open thread for chatter, rumors, etc. Have at it.

semin for marleau? I hope youre kidding, worst idea EVER
