Quote Of The Day

"I want to break free of these chains that are around me[.]" - Manny Fernandez, Minnesota Wild goaltender on his desire to be traded this summer.

Poor Manny and those gold-plated, diamond-encrusted $4.33 million chains (though maybe the complaining is just Manny being Manny). By the way, Minnesota, good luck trading a mediocre goalie who will make $9.25 million over the next two years [insert Jose Theodore joke here].

He should take...those golden wings...learn to fly away...learn to live so free...

Seriously, don't these people have agents to tell them to shut the hell up when they sound like spoiled petulant children?

Problem is, it's probably his agent who's telling him, "If you don't get out of here and get a starting job somewhere, you're going to be signing a $1 million contract in two years, and you can't live on that - you've got a family to feed!"

1) As was mentioned, Montreal found a taker (sucker) to accept a much worse contract in Jose. We doubt, (unless their asking price is ridiculous) that they will have trouble finding a buyer some where
2) There aren't too many decent goalies available this free agent period, so its a sellers market.

Manny is scheduled to make $9.25 million over the next two years and had a 2.55 GAA and decent SV% on a defense-first team. Tell me who will want that when a stud like Giguere and older, cheaper guys like Hasek, Belfour and CuJo are available as free agents, and guys like Toskala are available via trade?

To me, that contract and those numbers make him very hard to move.

JP, you going to be at the games this weekend? If so, let me know.

In Hershey? I doubt it. In Ottawa? Definitely not. At RFK? Possibly.

1) The fact that fossils like Belfour, Cujo and Hasek are going to be hot commodities only bolsters our opinion that its a sellers market for goalies.
2) If Hasek returns its to Detroit. Cujo will also probably stay put in the desert. Only leaving the guy with the cranky back and mental instability.
3) Yes, Giguere will be the most sought after UFA goalie, but after him, who's left? With the cap going to 48-49 mil, a team might think about absorbing the 4.5 mil and take a chance Manny will regain his form.

1) BTW his quote has to be one of the dumber made by a multimillion dollar athlete.
2) To compare slavery to being under a $ 9 million contract is beyond inane!

JP, your response made me smile. And then frown.
