"Eastern Conference Patsies"

The sky is falling up in Southern Alberta and a Calgary Sun columnist that apparently makes Dave Fay look like Kelly Ripa has already stuck a fork in the Flames' season. Along the way, he casts aspersions on not only the hometown team, but also some of their opponents:
The scariest part of the Flames' dreadful start is the club opened the season with one of the easiest schedules in the league. In response, half their losses came against Eastern Conference patsies such as... Washington.
"Eastern Conference patsies," eh? I bet if you were to poll Eastern Conference GMs, coaches and players not a single one of them would use the word "patsies" to describe the Caps. And I'm certain that if you asked Dion Phaneuf and his Flames teammates for their thoughts, you wouldn't hear that word either.

The Caps gave Calgary sixty minutes of hell the other night - the kind of game that Calgary would play back in 2003-04 en route to the Stanley Cup Finals - and deserve more respect than this.

Hat tip to TANK1 for the link.

1) We attribute his 'aspersion' to either being uninformed about the Caps or more likely making an exageration, or aspertion if you will, to bolster his point that the Flames have been terrible!
2) Clearly anyone who has been following NHL hockey would know that even last year with their poor recrod the Caps were not a 'patsy'. Teams had to earn their 2 points.

I saw the third period of that game, and the Caps never went into rope-a-dope with their third period lead. They kept coming at the Flames until the horn. They matched the Flames hit for hit and played with great poise in the Flames building. That was the quietest Calgary crowd I've ever heard.

Right now I'd call the Flyers the only Eastern patsy right now and even though they're not small they're definitly slow and not ready for the new NHL.

I'm sure I'll be talking to you folks when my Pens play you guys (Dec. 11).

We should all be used to "hockey pundits" slamming the southeast by now. Their ignorance is telling. Any team in the southeast can go to toe to toe with anyone else in the league.
