Time To Kiss Another Season Goodbye?

Hopefully not yet, but today's Frozen Moment at NHL.com features this great pic of Alex Ovechkin prior to last night's loss to Florida.

Any other suggestions for an appropriate caption?

"Favorite stick; I'll miss you when I'm signed away as a restricted free agent."

That's a great pic.

"Its ok, Akilina*, don't be sad. Only a few more years until we fly to Toronto."

*in this fantasy, that's his name for his stick, which means "Eagle" in Russian.

Ovie, channeling Ted Williams, smells the smoke from his stick after a one-timer.

does anyone really think Ovechkin's leaving as an RFA? Because he isn't. Even if it gets to free agency (July 1, I think) with AO resigned the Caps will match whatever any other team offers and keep him here in D.C.

As much as I love OV on the Caps, Id much rather see him in a real hockey town.
Thats a great pic of him, but unfortunately he cant help this team win. He can kiss his stick all he wants, but its the others on the team that are not putting out :)

He looks like the crying Native American commercial.

You mean this guy?

"Please, please, let me be as good as Sidney Crosby tonight"

"What's that? You think the ice is too soft here? Have you been talking to my skates again?"

He's probably not going anywhere. But at some point, if some nutty GM (Are you listening Mr. Lowe...) may offer him 20 million a year or something and Ted says "pass". Just ask the Ducks how much they are enjoying the services of Justin Penner. OV leaves? Likely, no. Possible, yes.

No,it isn't possible. This isn't Justin Penner we're talking about. You handwringers just make me shake my head in wonder. Does the sun even rise in the morning in your world?

And I know you were exaggerating for (ridiculous) effect, but unless the salary cap about doubles, no one can offer him $20 million a year.

Is Justin Penner any relation to Dustin Penner?

Anonymous said...

Yep. Oops.

He could be Justin Timberlake or Dustin Hoffman for all it matters at the moment. He's still 3-6-9 at the moment.

20 Million a year? First of all there's no way any GM would devote more than a third of his payroll to one player. This isn't the NBA.

Secondly I am pretty sure there is a maximum individual player salary limit under the new CBA

I went back an referenced a paper I had written about this topic as an undergrad for a Labor Economics course. I do not know if it has changed any since the new CBA was adopted but initially there was a provision that no player could account for more than 20% of his team's salary, which would mean the most a team could pay any player with the cap at $50.3M would be $10.03M.

dmg, per the CBA FAQ , NHL dot com.

"No player may be eligible to contract for or receive in excess of 20% of the Club's upper limit in total annual compensation (NHL salary plus signing, roster, reporting and all performance bonuses)."
