Am I crazy or is there a way we could trade for Kovalchuk? If Atlanta would take Kozlov, Morrisonn, and Clark we would be just about there. Atanta could then dump Kozlov and Morrisonn to free up some cap space at the end of the year and keep Clark. We could keep Sloan up and roll with the D we have now plus keep BJ as the number 1. Is that insane?
Yes, chris, that is insane. Our offense is fine, we don't need Kovalchuk. Our current D is not fine, we need to call up Alzner at the very least.
Anyway, that game was pretty great. 2 shots on 2 goals had me feeling pretty sorry for the big guy, but that's what happens when you backstop a really, really cruddy team. Guess he's done it for so many years he's used to it.
Deleted and reposted for screwup on the name (yes, I screwed up "chris" don't ask)
In all honesty - I wonder if the Caps deliberately backed off on Olie after the first. They had his number, and they were going to score whenever they wanted to. Everyone knew it, I think. There wasn't a reason to humiliate him, and I'm kind of glad things worked out the way they did.
Also, the crowd was v. v. quiet last night. Very quiet. I mean, yeah, I think folks were glad for the W, but also a little sad.
thispsaceforrent - a couple of shots from Semin and Ovi were passed up on even though they were wide open in the slot...
seemed odd.
does anyone think the Caps played well the second half of the game? way too many turnovers in their own zone when it should have beena simple clear or evade of a forechecker.
I felt the same way - great to get those goals early, but I felt bad for Olie. I was hoping it wouldn't get so bad that they'd pull him. Fortunately, it didn't.
1) The caps played very well for 1 period then coasted, thanks to Johnson. 2) yes, it seems Ovechkin and Semin when paired together both produce amazing goals, but way too many missed chances because they seem reluctant to shoot as they might otherwise do if they weren't paired together. A conundrum. 3) The Chris Clark non production still is a problem. Again, if he were not 'captain'(one of the most over rated titles in our opinion) would he be given a sweater if all were healthy? 4) Why did they chose to do the Kolzig tribute during the game? If he weren't playing fine, but it was ill timed and with the Caps early goals it seemed to take away what should/could have been a better way to welcome back a long time, beloved former player
I was shocked when fans at the visiting end started heckling Kolzig in the third. What was that about? They were all standing during the tribute... who knows.
"You could put three great periods together and win 9-0, but it doesn't happen that way. ... " [Boudreau quoted in Cory's article] But WHY not? Why? I screamed my self hoarse during Period 2 with one word last night: "Shoot!"
The -ahem- opposition goalie was vulnerable in the extreme. Shoot his lights out, for god's sake. This cutsie-wootsie stuff is agony to watch.
When the refs tagged another 2 minutes Unsportsmanlike onto Brash's penalty I was reminded of that immortal line in Bull Durham : "He must have called the guy a c*#@0-sucker".
faux, I wondered about that myself. My theory is that the Caps figured it was a win-win - if Kolzig was sucking, it would be fine, and if he were playing well, maybe it would distract him. It did seem a little strange that they did it mid-game.

Uh, Olie, you might get the chance to get one of those from the phone booth if you let in another goal in the first!
I will be a little sad if they have to pull Olie. Guess the Caps remember that he doesn't move laterally so well.
You are still welcome.
I love everything that Olaf has done for this city and the hockey club.
That being said, I love that he's getting lit.
He's better than Theodore.
Wow. Kinda looks like Bob's Big Boy.
haha, i have that olie card! it was up on my wall for years.
OK, who else thought they'd better play that tribute sooner rather than later after those first two goals?

Thanks! I've always loved that card. But boy, does he look young!

@ns: Yeah, I was frustrated with that too. Stop being cutesy with the puck and shoot. It is frustrating and a recurring problem.
I'm still glad Olie wasn't utterly humiliated.

Rabbit trip over blue line fall down go boom.
