I wouldn't mind losing the first game of the season normaly. But the way we lost worries me a bit.

poor showing. outhustled in the third. not all JT's fault but he better pick it up.

If you're BB, who do you go with tomorrow? My guess is Jose, but not because BB already committed to him opening up with both ends of the back to back. Johnson didn't exactly play himself into the start vs. CHI

That was ugly...generally, I am OK with, and even prefer, our young team to be humbled early, but the goaltending...oy, indeed.

If it's any consolation, Huet didn't do much better ;)

Alright Bruce, rally the troops buddy. An ass kicking of a reality-check was handed down tonight. You can't win the Cup without defense adn goal-tending.

The goaltending and defence tonight were terrible. The offence was great, but to let Atlanta scored 7 goals is pretty bad.

JP----Thoughts?

@ Anon: I'll have more in the morning, but my initial thoughts, generally, are that the PK was atrocious, JT60's rebound control was Kolzig-esque, and that Alex Semin was the best player on the ice.

Also, it should be a good reality check/wake-up call. Should be.

Why is Ovie so bad at penalty shots? And why does he keep taking them?

Thrashers came down on the Caps' defense in the first and WSH didn't know how to defend it.

Rabbit should have taken the penalty shot. He's the one who took the initial shot.

Though it's hard to criticize giving the PS to Ovi, my wife and I agreed before the shot that it should've been Semin.

Well, offense played well... Damn those Finnish goaltenders. Jose Theodore better earn his money. 3 out of 4 goals are on him. Defense was non-existing. Can't blaim Johny... Overall -- it's good that they got a wake-up call. Will see how they do it at home tomorrow...

Kozy owns shootouts...I woulda had him take the shot

I can't blame Theodore for the first two goals (Diamond Dave missed a back check, Iron Mike Green swung and missed on a clear attempt) but the last two? eeeeesh

I agree that Semin was the best Cap on the ice tonight (and I hate that guy), but I also have to point out that his shitty play along the boards by the benches could (should) be blamed for one of those Thrashers' goals.

It was nice to see that Semin and Green could rise to the occasion and take Ovie's scoring role when he was stymied. But sadly our Goalie's and D didn't rise to the occasion, and that worries me.

Disappointing loss but I am over it and ready to cheer my lungs out tomorrow.

@ Gary: It was the 6th goal (Armstrong's) to which you're referring, and yeah, his play in front of the bench on that one was bad.

I am a little concerned about the goaltending, but I think it can improve.

It's hard to get out of the "must win every game" mindset when watching the Caps. They should feel that way every night, but in reality, 0-1 doesn't mean a lot. How they respond does.

Erskine should never be allowed to shoot, if play at all. His blocked shot (his specialty) led to the GWG, if I am not mistaken. In addition to getting his shots blocked, he's slow to recover (and got beat on the other end of the ice for the goal). Hard to single out any one guy for bad D tonight, but I have seen him do stuff like that before.
