Huet "Would Like To Stay In Washington"

The IIHF site has an interview with Cristobal Huet up that's definitely worth checking out. Money quote: "I would like to stay in Washington."

I'm pretty certain that the feeling is mutual.

1) As per The Washington Posts Tarik "Huet can probably expect to double his $2.875 million salary".
2) If our math at Faux rumors is correct that would mean Huet would earn minimally 5.75 mil. A tad MORE than the 5.45 that Kolzig earned this past season.
3) Many might recall that the capable blog administrator, JP is on record stating that Huet would NOT be paid MORE than what Kolzig made this past season, and he bet us at FAUXRUMORS that this would be so.
4) We stand by our original prediction that Huet would NOT settle or less than what Kolzig made and for the Caps to keep Huet from bolting to Ottawa they'd have to pony up a very impressive offer. 5 years 30 million.

I don't mind overpaying Huet. Varlemnov and Neurith won't be ready for a few more years and goaltending isn't something with which I'm prepared to gamble.

he's saying all the right things, but i won't believe a damn thing until i see some signings.

I want him, but not at 5 years for 30 million. He isn't good enough or young enough for that kind of commitment. 3 years at 15-18 million, you bet. But my guess is that he'll get better money and/or more years from someone else (e.g., Ottawa). If that happens, so be it. Wade Dubliewicz (or however you spell it) is a quality goaltender who would come at a fraction of the price.

The Caps are competitive now, and Huet is the best option in a weak goalie market. Unfortunate timing for the Caps who need and want as much cap flexibility as possible in coming years.

Nevertheless I agree with jimmy jazz - I'm not prepared to gamble with the dime-a-dozen Dan Ellis' of the world. How about a nice front-loaded three (or four) year contract for Huet with an option year? Wouldn't he bite?

I'll double down on there being no chance of the Caps signing him at 5 years/$30m.

I'll back your bet, JP. The sky will rain monkeys before Huet commands a $6 million contract. I'm thinking $5.5 for four years will do the trick. What really pleases me is this is the first time I've actually heard Huet say he wants to stay in DC. Combine that with the glowing words from his agent and I think the odds are 70-30 he's back next year, maybe even 80-20.

Of course he's going to say he wants to stay in DC -- it's the smart move to get paid, whether he actually cares about staying with the Caps or not. Don't read too much into the posturing of a free agent...

Interesting comment from him considering his agent said the other day that Washington isn't Huet's first choice (or second, for that matter)...
