Sweet justice for the Bruins last night. I think it was Rooney who put them two men down for OT in Montreal. Eerily similar: a double minor high-stick, then a tripping call. This time the 2d penalty had to be called, unlike the lame hook Rooney called on Washington.
Interestingly enough, last night at the (Syracuse) Crunch game a few players and fans were sporting mohawks. Even the 100% bald Crunch penalty box official put a strip of wide, black hockey tape down the middle of his head.
As for this afternoon's game...I'm hoping I don't have to listen to Mike Emrick call this game. If you want to know how much NBC is into the NHL, note that they still have a picture of AO in last year's colors on their web site.
So I gots my nitro pills, my aspirin, and my emergency defibrillator is all charged up. A nice late game lead by the Cardiac Caps would be most welcome. That way I won't have to wear my blood pressure cuff for the entire game.
Ted Leonsis has talked in recent days about how the fans never embraced the Jagr teams, even though they were relatively successful. Although I've remained a die-hard fan, I certainly have not felt this deep a connection to a Caps team in a long time--probably since the Langway-Hunter-Stevens era. This team belongs to us in a way recent teams haven't, and I even include the '98 team in that. That was a great ride, but it felt like a fluke right up to the bitter and not unexpected end.
Now we have our Caps again. They're homegrown and they seem genuinely proud to wear the sweater. Of course, there is one respect in which these don't feel like our Caps. In the old days, I always felt that we were waiting to see how the Caps would lose. Now I feel like we're waiting to see how they'll win.
Remember Tony K's column from circa 1995 in which he suggested that the Caps adopt a new logo: A small dog, choking itself? I'm planning to put that image out my mind along with blue and bronze color scheme.

You've said it better than I would've been able to. This is EXACTLY how I feel. I've been following the team since I was 4, so it's REALLY hard for me to break the "we're down by 2? Fuck, game's over!" routine that I've grown accustomed to over the last 19 years. I saw us drop 4-2 in a 3:something span and just felt sick to my stomach. But, of course, the comeback kids do it again. I'm trying to break that habit, but it's been that way all the way up until thanksgiving.
Anyway, I personally think we took some wind out of philly's sails, and I hope to see a stomp today. Go caps.

On the other hand it is obvious that the League has mandated that the referees do everything in their power to help the Caps. The NHL and the referees are a disgrace. The Flyers were penalized at least 4 times.. 3 out of those calls were bogus. Hartnell was tripped into Huet. It is obvious that the refs are also trying to NOT give the Flyers any powerplays. Lupul was hooked and nothing was called.. so what do they do instead?? call a penalty on Lupul. It is so obvious that big money and the League want Ovechkin's team to win. What they fail to realize is that the Flyers draw the best TV ratings of any team in the league, bar none.

If the Flyers would be given on average 5 to 7 powerplays per game they would win. they have 2nd best powerplay in the league behind Montreal. So it seems obvious that they are trying to minimize the powerplays for the Flyers.
I don't know if Briere was trying to hit Huet or not. He looked like he was trying to skate behind Huet but Huet got in the way. But clearly Hartnell was tripped into Huet by the Caps defenseman who should have gotten a penalty.

The refs in this game have been okay. They've missed a couple both ways, but that's life. What I don't understand is (1) why all the conspiracy theorists are NHL fans and (2) why people so readily insult the integrity of the officials
Pretty weak crowd. Caps look like the got out hustled in every part of the game. Couldn't win in the dot, couldn't hit, couldn't control the puck, couldn't win along the boards, couldn't make passes, couldn't get the puck to the net. Other than that, it was fantastic.
And, Hazardous, really, Huet is hardly to blame for the goals. It was a team effort.
Blaming Huet is nuts. He could have had the first one, but it was a good shot on a breakaway; the second he had no chance on. Plus at the end of the day Huet stopped 39 of 41 and the Capitals didn't score. I hardly think he was the problem

Soulie: Two really, really weak goals. Sure, every goal is a team effort, for or against, basically. However, when a goalie lets in a shot as weak as that first one, I don't really have any faith in him. To say that first shot was "good" is absolutely ridiculous. It was extremely weak.
