Thursday Open Thread

In the spirit of The Pensblog...

Congrats to Olie Kolzig on his milestone win, and, for those of you keeping score at home:
  1. More goals than Glenn Anderson or Pat LaFontaine ever scored in a single season
  2. More goals than Cam Neely or Dino Ciccarelli ever scored in a single season

I liked Ovy's "fifty-fiveth" goal of the season. Can't wait for his sixty-onest, sixty-twond, and sixty-threerd.

It looked like they were showing a montage of Kolzig on the Big Screen after the game was over - wished I could have seen that. Maybe they'll air it on Comcast. Yea, maybe they won't.

Congrats to Olie. It's been a tough year, but he's looking better now than he was earlier in the season. He gives up two goals in 5-on-3 situations. Can't bitch about that.

1) The 'montage' was mostly from past/current players (and Ted) giving congratulatory sentiments to Ollie and his 300th.
2) It seemed to have been rushed a bit. Probably would have been better to do that before Friday's game?

Paul- The video is on washingtoncaps.com. Go to Caps TV and it's there.

Congrats Olie! And WAY TO GO CAPS! That was a great game!

Psst... Victor... want a third shot at it?

Uh...Jeff. Yeah, that's it, Jeff...

Iginla is scary. can you imagine a line of Ovie-Backstrom-Iginla? that line would be unstoppable.

Wow... more goals than Dino ever had.
That really hits home for me. Dino was my goal-scoring hero growing up on the Caps. It's just one of those comparables that brings it home!

BTW, when Ovy plays like the MVP + the Caps don't give up goals unless there's a 5 on 3 against = WE WIN!

"Psst... Victor... want a third shot at it?"

LOL!

thank you

That game was just as important psychologically as it was for the two points earned for the Caps. The "Weekend from Hell" is officially behind them.

Good to see Olie get to 300 wins. He could reach #20 all-time before the end of the season, if he has more games like he played last night in him.

I usually don't say nice things about the refs, especially McCreary, but they made amends for a couple of missed calls (Bradley's near de-capitation) and some questionable calls that led to the second 5 on 3.

Caps still need to find a way to bury some of those glorious chances they had around the net last night.

In the Game Notes for last night's contest, it listed Brent Johnson as being one win away from 100 career wins. D'oh! I have a feeling that Johnny might be stuck at 99 for awhile.

nice to see that McCreary did not tackle or pin anyone in this game.

1) Not sure if it was mentioned by any of the media, but Jurcina played one of his best games as a Cap. He was using his body/hitting everything that moved last night.
2) Kudos to Erskine for standing up for his teammate against Godard. He actually held his own in that scrap for the first half anyway.

NO.

I'm going to crawl into a hole and pull it in after me, instead.

@ Victor: We're just bustin' balls, and it least you didn't hit on any of my big pet peeve misspellings - "Emminger," "Federov," or, worst of all, "Ollie."

Are we to assume that Olie has those 6-pack abs, too? Cuz if he does, at his age, well all I can say is WOW - just WOW.

Victor said...

Hey, that's how I took it, JP. What's misspelling Geoff's name between friends?

OTOH, the first guy who I saw with a Fedorov sweater, the first game after the trade? Guess how it was spelled.

(If you can't figure it out, let's just say the original sweater was white, and the one I saw him wearing at the game after *that* was red.)

Unknown said...

Victor- I recall the intro on CSN for the NJ game right after the deadline and they showed a fan with a red "Federov" sweater. You think you'd double-check before dropping that much coin on a jersey...I must have checked the spelling for "Laughlin" about 10 times before I ordered mine, even though I've seen the name about 82 times a year for the last however-many years!

ted,
unfortunately, the "weekend from hell" is not even close to behind them unless they make the playoffs. and if they dont, it will rear its ugly head on these boards for weeks to follow. oh yea, and dont think i forgot that fucking toronto game when sundin scored with 29 seconds left on some bullshit rebound either, olie.

@Sheesh

I didn't mean to imply that those lost/wasted points wouldn't come back to haunt them. I just meant that they could have mentally thrown in the towel afterwards; especially given the fact that they got into penalty trouble again last night.

A loss last night could have been devastating to the team psyche (if there is such a thing).

Hey, gents, avoid the Federov vs Fedorov kerfuffle and just call him Gramps. (Yeah - look up 'kerfuffle'.) Heh heh

So i was in Colorado Springs last night (well, through tomorrow, actually, but whatever). Was the "Ovechcam" a success?

That Helperin guy just scored against Boston. Now has 5 G 5 A in 9 games for the Bolts.
