In case you missed it during the whirlwind that was the opening weekend of training camp, on Friday NHL.com posted their in-depth preview of the Caps.
I haven't read all of NHL.com's previews to use as points of reference, but this one is pretty effusive in it's praise of and optimism for the squad from D.C., freely throwing around phrases like "the Capitals are ready to challenge for the Southeast Division championship," and "some people, including Ovechkin, think he's the most talented young player in the NHL[.]"
Sure, there's some spotty fact-checking in there (Boyd Gordon was not the Caps first pick in 2002 - he wasn't even their second pick), but it's a good read nonetheless.

Ummm....nice read as you say but they even list Schultz as not with the Caps.
Not to mention "Mike Pettinger" ...
@ anon: They list Schultz as "In The Wings," which I think is fair. In my opinion, he is not guaranteed to start the season in D.C.
@ buttercup: They should've gone the Alzner route and just referred to him as "Mr. Pettinger."
We laugh at "Mr. Pettinger."
We would not have laughed at "Mr. Kolzig."
...and Jurcina henceforth shall be referred to as, "Sir."
And apparently Olie beat out Jon Casey and Bill Ranford in 97-98 for the starting goaltender job.
That's OK, I guess it's not all that difficult to forget about Jim Carey.
That article made my teeth hurt.
Also, they've fixed the errors I think. At least the Gordon one is fixed. And I didn't notice Princess's name being wrong.
Uhhh, never mind. I'm an idiot. Need to read closer.
Still made my teeth hurt.
