Caps Re-Sign Eminger, Sutherby

The Caps have re-signed two of their restricted free agents, defenseman Steve Eminger and center Brian Sutherby. Details to follow.

Update: Eminger's deal is his qualifying offer ($1,000,000), Sutherby's is not (his salary will be $800,000 - the same amount he made last year and $40k less than his QO). Both are one-year deals.

Update: Per Nate Ewell with the Caps, Sutherby's deal is a one-way deal (his QO would have been two-way), thus he took less money for that provision.

Any idea if they accepted the qualifying offer or negotiated a new deal?

I'm not sure, though I'd assume that if they were going to sign their QOs, they might have done so earlier on.

Then again, the two of them would have some nerve asking for more than their QOs.

Stay tuned - I'm sure some more details will turn up.

according to Tarik....Eminger's deal is a one-year worth $1 million. Sutherby is also a one-year deal, but his is worth $800,000.

Anyone want to venture a guess as to what Suts got for the $40k he left on the table by not signing his QO? A one-way deal? 250 free texts per month on his Verizon Wireless phone?

JP.. How did you find that information? And why in the world would he sign for less then is QO? $40K isn't that much when talking about players making over $7M.

The best place for current salary information is at , but to find the two players' salaries from last year, I Googled it.

To offer a QO to an RFA, teams have to provide a minimum 5% or 10% raise (depending on the previous year's salary and only for salaries up to $1m) - that's in the CBA.

I am kind of shocked that Suts actually makes LESS than Emmy. Am I the only one?

(Don't know why Blogger chooses not to accept my html today)

On Ice -

I think Emmy is more valuable and has more upside than Suts, but that's just my opinion - both have been a bit disappointing to date.

Your answer's in the update - it's a one-way deal.

Phrase about to enter the lexicon: Osala has Suts-hands.

JP - Off the subject - Do you mind if I list you in the links section of my new (and very amateur) hockey blog?

JP said...

Heck no - and I've added you to the "Home Team."

Welcome to the Blogosphere (and we're all amateurs here, more or less).

1) Sutherby is useless. Yes, he wore the 'A' last season, but he really has been a 1st round bust. He doesn't do much of anything really well. He doesn't have good hands. Isn't a good skater, etc.
2) We'll give him credit for sticking up well for his team mates, but that's not a good enough reason for him to soak up a roster spot for another year.

With all due respect (and just how much is that?), Faux, Sutherby isn't useless.

He's a decent enough fourth-line center (won more than half of his draws, is a valuable penalty killer, is gritty, etc.). His third line spot is now Boyd Gordon's, but I don't have much problem with Sutherby as my fourth line pivot, at least for one more year. Heck, he's still just 25 and is only one year removed from a 14-goal campaign.

exactly, hes not being asked to be anything more than a fourth line center who can kill penalties, stick up for his teammates and provide some leadership, and he is very good at all those things, nothing more, and thats fine

JP is my hero. Hilarious.

I had such high hopes for Eminger, but he does not appear (to me, at least) to play with any passion. I wonder if he's really happy here.

1) From 1st round draft pick, who was(prematurely) placed along side Jagr in 2001-2002, to now being regarded as a 4th line center who can 'kill penalties'. Sounds like the quintessential bust.
2) This team is well, teeming with 4th liners. Yes he scored 14 goals 2 years ago, but you failed to mention he was second worst that year in team +/-.(-17) (He is also NOT a particularly good penalty killer) We'd take Gordon any day to fill the role as 4th line center/PK specialist.

No, Alex Volchkov is the quintessential first round bust. A player taken with the #26 pick who plays a regular shift every night certainly is not.

Go back over the past 25 years and you won't find many 26th picks who have been even as successful as Suts (though Martin Havlat, Ziggy Palffy and Claude Lemieux would be notables who have).

And Sutherby played 7 games at the beginning of 2001-02 and everyone on earth knew he'd be sent back to Juniors - he didn't start the year with the team so he could center Jagr.

Really, Faux, you need to take your heads out of your asses and stop trolling so much.

Do you think Sutherby will continue to wear the "A"?
