Monday Roundup/Caps 7, Bolts 1

[SeSo Open Thread]

This (from NHL.com) is sweet (and in case you're wondering those first two guys are just eight years older - combined - than that third guy):

That tells you most of what you need to know this morning (though it doesn't mention Dan Boyle's reckless high-stick on Alex Ovechkin or how good Olie Kolzig has been since returning from injury -100 saves on 105 shots against), but this quote from Bolts captain Tim Taylor in Tarik's recap struck me:
"[The Caps] are out of the playoffs. They have no chance. Every year they are like this."
Obviously you don't mean every year, do you Tim "The Toe" Taylor?

Daily Awards
  • Hart: Joe Sakic (4A, +1, 6 SOG in 4-3 win)
  • Ross: Joe Sakic, Tomas Fleischmann (4 points each)
  • Norris: Alexei Zhitnik (G, 2A, 1 SOG, 2 hits, 3 takeaways, 0 giveaways)
  • Vezina: Olaf Kolzig (W, 30 saves on 31 shots against)
  • Richard: Alexander Semin (3G)
  • Calder: Tomas Fleischmann (2G, including the game-winner, 2A, +4, 5 SOG)
  • Aiken: Sean Burke (2 goals allowed on 2 shots against in just 4:22 of work... that's a 30.00 GAA and a 0.00 SV%)

Another youngster who is playing very solid, two-way hockey is Brooks Laich. For example, on Friday night he closed a 5-foot gap on a short-handed breakaway to foil one of the Leafs' better chances of the evening. He played an equally solid Sunday. I think he's here to stay.

You're absolutely right - Laich was fantastic on Friday night, getting huge minutes and in every situation (perhaps most notably on the point on the first PP unit).

On a sidenote, I saw Laich at Clyde's after that game with Morrisonn, Green and "Rooster" (Giroux).

It is not a coincidence that when Semin is more aggressive defensively and especially on the forecheck, that he scores three goals. I'm sure the coaching staff is, er, reminding him of that today.

Brooks Laich is still a fourth-liner on a playoff team.

Someone should remind Taylor just how fortunate he is to be with Tampa Bay. Talent-wise he actually is no better or worse than our 3rd liners. There but for the grace of God goes Tim Taylor

Re Boyle's reckless high-stick: all seson long I've been just amazed @ the officials obsession with obstruction calls - both real and imagined - and their inability to see the really blantant, such as what Boyle obviously did; as well as their unwillingness to take charge in order to prevent things like what Simon did to a guy who in "just finishing his check" (with a non-call) succeeeded in provoking Simon

I can forgive the refs for not seeing Boyle's high stick on Ovechkin. The lead ref had to watch the puck/Giroux. The back ref, actually in the correct position, was back at the blue line. Boyle and Ovechkin were far enough ahead of the play that the back official couldn't/didn't see it, while the front official was, correctly, not paying attention to them. Unfortunate? Yes, but understandable. Even on the replays it took a couple looks for me to figure out what happened.

and the linesmen were doing what, exactly? Thought in the new world order all four on-ice officials work as a team.

By the way, allof us Avs bloggers generally agree that last night wasn't Sakic's best game. He had a couple give aways and took a bad penalty late in the game...

That's why he's the best.

But this Ovechkin kid might just make me watch some eastern conference hockey.

I have to admit, I didn't watch the whole Colorado game, but turned it on late and he certainly dominated when I was watching (throw in the over-the-top homer announcers on Altitude and I was under the impression that he had had a phenomenal game).

The homer Altitude announcers kill me. I actually got the San Jose feed, since that's where i live, so i didn't get them. I usually get them and they'll have you believe Brett Clark is the next Ray Borque

Even so Sakic looked a little off early, lost the puck without even being checked off of it 2-3 times. I can't even remember him doing it 2-3 times in a season.

He just looked tired from back to back playoff type games. Of course he's the greatest and came back with a very solid 3rd period and a breathtaking feed to Hejduk for the game winner.

I guess it's sick to talk about an "off" day like that but that's why he's going to the Hall of fame right?

No doubt.

Oh, and on a tangentially-related note, while you're here you can thank the Caps for the pick that Quebec used to draft Sakic.

On an even less-related note, the Caps actually drafted Burnaby Joe's little brother in 1990.

At least you got Dale Hunter for the Pick.

umm semin + flash = 45, sakic = 37...

JP said...

Maybe I wrote that three weeks ago. Or maybe my math was lousy at that hour. Take your pick. Anyway, I hope it feels so good to be right. There's nothing more exhilarating than pointing out the shortcomings of others, is there?

FWIW, I thought it was just a joke.

I know I lol'd quietly so as to not alert Big Brother that I was reading at work.

Next year's point of emphasis should be stick fouls. There's an epidemic of mid-grade slashing in the NHL.

Apparently Danny Boyle apologized to AO for the (unpenalized) high-stick that split #8's lip and required 16 stitches.

I've always liked Boyle, and this move - apologizing for an accident the likes of which probably happens every in just about every game - further cements him in my mind as a class act.
