A Diamond In Le Rough?

Hat tip to Capital Fanatic for pointing out this article from the Halifax Daily News in which the paper doles out its picks for the best and worst of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Their pick for Best Player, Best Playmaker and Best Stickhandler? Caps' prospect Mathieu Perreault, the team's second pick of the sixth round in last summer's drat, who is currently third in the Q in scoring with 36 goals and 76 assists (fellow Caps prospect Francois Bouchard - ineligible for this poll - leads the League in scoring with 120 points).

Problem with that kid is his size. 5'8" 150 lbs! Unless he put on some lbs since the draft he needs to do some eating!
By the way, where is another undersized former cap 2nd round pick, Mr. Bourque? With all the injuries and the season pretty much over why not give the kid a game or two? Seems every other Hershey Bear has been up with the big club for at least a game or 2 the past 2 years except Chris.

Yeah, he's a midget, but you can gain weight and even height (at that age) easier than you can gain skill and hockey sense.

Regarding C-Bo, you may have hit the nail on the head with your word choice - the Caps have given plenty of prospects a shot in D.C. over the past two years, as you say, but I feel they're reluctant to "give" Bourque anything; they're going to make him earn his chances.

The knock on the kid has always related to a sense of entitlement, so they likely are going to make him work twice as hard for an NHL opportunity than they might with some other prospects.

That's just my impression (and I know he's also had some health issues at times).

Perrault isn't related to my hero, Gilbert Perrault, is he? Just wondering, I know it's a common name up there.

I don't believe so... but his favorite player is Daniel Briere.

What are your thoughts of trying to sign his partner Beauregard? He is also regarded as one of the best is the list as well.

Beauregard was eligible for the 2004 draft but was never picked. Why? I dunno. But it can't be a good thing. Invite him to camp, perhaps, but I wouldn't expect anything from him.

From what I read, he was injured in his draft year, but seems fully recovered. Perrault and him seem to work well together, they may be able to carry that into the next level.

What makes you think that a pair of QMJHL teammates might be able to carry their Junior success on to the next level?

Absolutely nothing. It was just thought. But is there something that says it wouldn't? I'm not pushing for it, it was just a thought. There is nothing specific that makes me think either are sure things at the next level on their own. Lots of high scoring juniors don't pan out at the next level. They have a known chemistry now appearantly. I said "they may be able".

Did you click the link in JP's last comment, Stimpy? It was an example of where that chemistry did carry on. I'm pretty sure he's agreeing with you that it could work, but who knows?

Pretty much. All I'm saying is there's a reason the dude was never drafted, and presumably 30 teams, their scouts, and others know the reason(s). Should the scouts take another look? Sure - couldn't hurt.

Sorry, typing before I looked. I was in the middle of some work stuff. Sarcasm can be so hard to read when you're not focused properly.

It is still a crap shoot though, but I like the idea of the three top scorers in the Q Caps property. It helps the odds of getting at least one NHL player.

and why is bouchard ineligible?

"The Daily News has determined the best and worst of the QMJHL's East Division in more than 30 categories."

Bouchard plays in the West Division.
