Caps Trade Ouellet

Washington, D.C. – December 2, 2005 – The Washington Capitals have traded goaltender Maxime Ouellet to the Vancouver Canucks for a fifth-round pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced.

Ouellet, 24, was acquired from Philadelphia along with first-, second- and third-round draft choices for Adam Oates on March 19, 2002. Ouellet played six games for the Capitals in 2003-04, posting a 2-3-1 record and a 3.12 goals-against average.

Just to recap the trade that brough Max to DC, the Flyers got Oates (and the 10 points in 14 regular season games and 2 assists in 5 playoff games that he provided them) and the Caps got Ouellet, Alexander "MIA" Semin, Maxime Daigneault (now the team's top goaltending prospect) and Derek Krestanovich (of the ECHL's Fresno Falcons). Nearly four years later and it's not quite the steal we thought we had back at the 2002 trade deadline, but it still can turn out to be a big win for the Caps, especially if Semin ever comes back to North America.
